Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in Australia, but as its popularity rises, so too does the evidence regarding the physical toll it takes on the body. At Canning Podiatry Centre, we believe in helping you play smarter, not just harder.
What the Evidence Says
Recent epidemiological data, including a 2025 analysis of sports-related injuries, highlights that while pickleball is an excellent way to remain active, it carries a unique injury profile. Research indicates that falls are a primary mechanism of injury (Yu et al., 2025). Furthermore, while acute injuries—such as fractures—are often reported in emergency settings (Ghattas et al., 2024), many recreational players frequently present to our clinic with chronic overuse issues.
Common Risks We See at the Clinic:
Balance and Stability: Research suggests that falls, particularly among older players, can lead to significant orthopedic issues (Azar et al., 2024). Improving your foot stability is your first line of defence.
Overuse Strains: The high frequency of stop-and-start motions leads to conditions like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis. These are not "part of the game"—they are signs that your body’s load tolerance is being exceeded.
The "No-Ignore" Rule
If you experience pain that persists more than 48 hours, or if you notice changes in your balance during play, it is time for a professional assessment. We don't just treat the injury; we assess the biomechanical "why" behind it to keep you on the court long-term.
